Shut up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, a man, can clearly tell a bunch of women what our own equality looks like.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll bet he thinks he knows what racism is like, too.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He does know what racism is like! Here, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlightpolitics.info\/post\/15291984581\/the-names-of-many-young-men-particularly-young\">let me quote you some of his knowledge of what racism looks like<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The names of many young men \u2014 particularly young Chinese from Hong Kong \u2014 are often rather touchingly quaint. This summer, I have \u2014 these are first names, mind you \u2014 a \u201cFitzgerald\u201d; a \u201cWoodrow\u201d; three \u201cBenedicts\u201d (my middle name); two \u201cHenrys\u201d; one \u201cMaxwell\u201d; and, my favorite, one \u201cColfax.\u201d It sounds like a parody of the membership roster of my grandfather\u2019s fraternity, circa 1926! And at the risk of sounding horribly classist, it strikes me as a rather naive attempt to deliberately appropriate WASP cache. Imagine all of these parents, newly immigrated, working long hours to clothe young \u201cWinston Wilberforce Chan\u201d in what television has led them to believe is the outfit of success: polo shirts and chinos with shiny penny loafers. From the perspective of someone who grew up in WASP country-club culture, this sincere attempt at imitation strikes me as, at the least, oddly misplaced!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not convinced yet of his incredible knowledge of racism? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hugoschwyzer.net\/2008\/06\/04\/jealousy-fear-and-still-more-on-the-myth-of-male-weakness\/\">Here&rsquo;s another one:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>My other student, \u201cYesenia\u201d, comes from a Hispanic background, and has a new, Salvadoran-born boyfriend. Without belaboring the point, her story is essentially the same: her new guy wants her to stop chatting with other men and to wear less revealing clothing. Yesenia came to see me last Thursday; Lori came by yesterday. Former students in my women\u2019s history class, each wanted my advice on what was essentially the same issue.<\/p>\n<p>I mention the ethnicity of the folks involved because there seems to be such a clear cultural component to seeing jealousy as acceptable. No, I\u2019m not trying to reinforce a stereotype of Latins or Middle Easterners as particularly \u201chot-blooded\u201d and thus more prone to misogynstic fits of green-eyed rage than \u201ccalm\u201d WASPs. But it\u2019s clear that certain ethnic groups \u2014 in this case, Armenians and Salvadorans \u2014 are more willing than others to associate male jealousy with evidence of love and care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>blueandbluer: ailanthusaltissima: bricksandmortarandchewinggum: Ohhhhhhhh.
