Dedicated to research into conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament, the Institute compiles annual data of Military Expenditure, arms trade, nuclear forces and all related topics.<\/p>\n<p>The table above illustrates the world top 10 military spenders for the past year. The US alone amounts to 43% of global Military Expenditures, followed in a distant second place by China, with 7.3%.<\/p>\n<p>To provide context of what these figures amount to, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sipri.org\/research\/armaments\/milex\/resultoutput\/sources_methods\/definitions\">I am including the SIPRI definition of military expenditure<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Where possible, SIPRI military expenditure include all current and capital expenditure on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the armed forces, including peace keeping forces<\/li>\n<li>defense ministries and other government agencies engaged in defense projects<\/li>\n<li>paramilitary forces when judged to be trained, equipped and available for military operations<\/li>\n<li>military space activities <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Such expenditures should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>personnel<\/li>\n<li>all expenditures on current personnel, military and civil<\/li>\n<li>retirement pensions of military personnel<\/li>\n<li>social services for personnel and their families <\/li>\n<li>operations and maintenance<\/li>\n<li>procurement<\/li>\n<li>military research and development<\/li>\n<li>military construction<\/li>\n<li>military aid (in the military expenditures of the donor country) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Excluded military related expenditures<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>civil defence<\/li>\n<li>current expenditure for previous military activities<\/li>\n<li>veterans benefits<\/li>\n<li>demobilization<\/li>\n<li>conversion of arms production facilities<\/li>\n<li>destruction of weapons <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the Swedish think tank SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) released its Yearbook.
