I guess part of it is tied to my job (amongst other things, I write trend reports for customers, which require scouting news and different sources by dozens), part of it is just habit.

I rely very much on Google Alerts. I have set alerts for certain key words (like “women’s rights” or “patriarchy”, just to give two examples) so, every time something containing those words is posted in the news, Google compiles all of it in a daily mail that I receive early every morning. The beauty of Google Alerts is that you can select if you want to receive alerts when News organizations post content with these words online or if you want blog posts with these words, or both. I have the Alerts set to only News organizations (ugh, you don’t want to know how ugly blogs can be on certain topics; I prefer to avoid headdesk situations with my morning coffee). Then, I use a Firefox extension, Sage, for RSS feeds (I suspect there are better, but I am a creature of habit and have been using this one for years). I easily have 300+ feeds in my RSS list. Needless to say, I don’t read them all, but scan a few regularly (Mother Jones, The Atlantic, Racialicious, Sociological Images, etc.).

And then, there are two aggregators I really like: Metafilter and Reddit. The feminist subsection of Reddit, 2X, is amazingly good (compared to some of the most disgusting sexism of some of other Reddit subcategories). It sometimes reminds me of what the old Groupthink at Jezebel used to be like and even though I do not comment there, it is refreshing to see that the place serves many women to have open discussions on topics that are not always easily disclosed in one’s daily life.

Awww thanks!
