This is how he is described:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Gene Sharp is an American intellectual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/17\/world\/middleeast\/17sharp.html?ref=genesharp\">whose ideas can be fatal to the world&rsquo;s despots.<\/a> For decades, Mr. Sharp&rsquo;s practical writings on nonviolent revolution \u2014 most notably \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeinstein.org\/organizations\/org\/FDTD.pdf\">From Dictatorship to Democracy<\/a>,\u201d   a 93-page guide to toppling autocrats, available for download in 24   languages \u2014 have inspired dissidents around the world, including in   Burma, Bosnia, Estonia and Zimbabwe, and now <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/tunisia\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">Tunisia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/egypt\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">Egypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Egypt\u2019s April 6 Youth Movement was struggling to recover from a   failed effort in 2005, its leaders tossed around \u201ccrazy ideas\u201d about   bringing down the government, said Ahmed Maher, a leading strategist.   They stumbled on Mr. Sharp while examining the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/749469.stm\">Serbian movement Otpor<\/a>, which he had influenced.<\/p>\n<p>When the nonpartisan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonviolent-conflict.org\/\">International Center on Nonviolent Conflict<\/a>,   which trains democracy activists, slipped into Cairo several years ago   to conduct a workshop, among the papers it distributed was Mr. Sharp\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeinstein.org\/organizations103a.html\"> \u201c198 Methods of Nonviolent Action,\u201d<\/a> a list of tactics that range from <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/topics\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/h\/hunger_strikes\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">hunger strikes<\/a> to \u201cprotest disrobing\u201d to \u201cdisclosing identities of secret agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dalia Ziada, an Egyptian blogger and activist who attended the workshop and later organized similar sessions on her own, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/14\/world\/middleeast\/14egypt-tunisia-protests.html\">said trainees were active in both the Tunisia and Egypt revolts<\/a>.   She said that some activists translated excerpts of Mr. Sharp\u2019s work   into Arabic, and that his message of \u201cattacking weaknesses of dictators\u201d   stuck with them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Great reading for those interested in an activism primer.
