Today, The New York times is running a story about the Nixon tapes released this week, On Nixon Tapes, Disparaging Remarks About Ethnic Groups<\/a> and quite honestly, it is so appalling that I don’t even know what to quote from it. Some snippets:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Jews have certain traits,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Irish have certain \u2014 for example, the Irish can\u2019t drink. What you always have to remember with the Irish is they get mean. Virtually every Irish I\u2019ve known gets mean when he drinks. Particularly the real Irish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nixon continued: \u201cThe Italians, of course, those people course don\u2019t have their heads screwed on tight. They are wonderful people, but,\u201d and his voice trailed off.<\/p>\n

A moment later, Nixon returned to Jews: \u201cThe Jews are just a very aggressive and abrasive and obnoxious personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

and then, of course, he also has opinions about African Americans:<\/p>\n

\u201cBill Rogers has got \u2014 to his credit it\u2019s a decent feeling \u2014 but somewhat sort of a blind spot on the black thing because he\u2019s been in New York,\u201d Nixon said. \u201cHe says well, \u2018They are coming along, and that after all they are going to strengthen our country in the end because they are strong physically and some of them are smart.\u2019 So forth and so on.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy own view is I think he\u2019s right if you\u2019re talking in terms of 500 years,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s wrong if you\u2019re talking in terms of 50 years. What has to happen is they have be, frankly, inbred. And, you just, that\u2019s the only thing that\u2019s going to do it, Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And more about Jews, this time, he even gets Kissinger to participate in the loathing (and condone genocide to boot):<\/p>\n

An indication of Nixon\u2019s complex relationship with Jews came the afternoon Golda Meir, the Israeli prime minister, came to visit on March 1, 1973. The tapes capture Meir offering warm and effusive thanks to Nixon for the way he had treated her and Israel.<\/p>\n

But moments after she left, Nixon and Mr. Kissinger were brutally dismissive in response to requests that the United States press the Soviet Union to permit Jews to emigrate and escape persecution there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy,\u201d Mr. Kissinger said. \u201cAnd if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern.\u201d<\/p>\n
