{"id":4159,"date":"2010-11-18T16:52:50","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T16:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.transversalmedia.eu\/i-get-bothered-when-certain-facial-features-are\/"},"modified":"2010-11-18T16:52:50","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T16:52:50","slug":"i-get-bothered-when-certain-facial-features-are","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theresearchpapers.org\/archive\/i-get-bothered-when-certain-facial-features-are\/","title":{"rendered":"I get bothered when certain facial features are labelled as &#8220;European&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mypetelephant.tumblr.com\/post\/1610442130\/i-get-bothered-when-certain-facial-features-are\">mypetelephant<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I understand that people who do this are coming from a good place.\u00a0 They want to celebrate beauty that is outside of the normalized set of European features we usually celebrate.\u00a0 But white skin doesn\u2019t make one look any less non-European.\u00a0 The fact that some WOC of color have white skin, a small nose, large eyes, and high cheekbones doesn\u2019t make them \u201cEuropean looking.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s insulting because it takes their physical features away from their own heritage and insists that because these features are normalized, they are no longer a part of their ethnic heritage and are now instead \u201cEuropean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jezebel had posted a cover for Indian Vogue that featured a lot of Indian models (yay!), and most of the comments were fixated on how light everyone\u2019s skin is.\u00a0 This is definitely an issue in Indian media, and one that should be pointed out whenever it happens because it is important that beauty not be linked to the lightness of your skin.\u00a0 However, what I found incredibly obnoxious was the number of comments that went along the lines of, \u201cThey\u2019re so pale, they don\u2019t look Indian.\u201d\u00a0 They do look Indian!\u00a0 How can they not look Indian!\u00a0 They\u2019re Indian!\u00a0 We\u2019re not all dark.\u00a0 We\u2019re just as diverse in appearance as Europeans.\u00a0 It\u2019s possible to discuss the need for more images of women who do not conform to our normalized European sense of beauty (which isn\u2019t really as static as some people seem to think) without saying that non-European women who meet these standards are actually \u201cEuropean\u201d in appearance instead of attributing their features to their own heritage.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also: what exactly does European mean? A Swedish woman looks nothing like a woman from Kosovo who, in turn, looks completely different from a French woman. All of them are equally European, however, their complexions, features, hair types, etc will be totally different from one another.
