A survey by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has found that half of those heading maternity teams thought the “increasingly complex” nature of birth was adding to demands on the time of their staff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Obese women are more likely to suffer complications during childbirth, and they account for a third of all such maternal deaths. Babies born to them are 50 per cent more likely than average to be admitted to intensive care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then later on the article goes on to explain the drastic budget cuts in maternity wards:<\/p>\n

The survey found that budgets had been cut for nearly a third (30 per cent) of maternity units, while a similar proportion (33 per cent) of units had been asked to cut staffing levels.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, while the real news is the fact that the budget for maternity has been cut in one third, the ones to blame are, of course, fat women and the additional burden<\/em> they place on the system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
