My colorist is awesome, but I\u2019m newly self employed, and I just can\u2019t keep shelling out $250 every 3 months for blond highlights. What was once a vanity project has now become a more necessary youthening project: I\u2019m finally going gray. Should I try The Coloring Project on my own?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t agree. Coloring my hair is one of the easiest things I\u2019ve ever done myself. Even when I do screw it up it still isn\u2019t a big deal. Why are people so precious when it comes to their hair?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The reason some people are so involved with their hair is because for many, it is a vital issue of survival. There are professions (and professional environments) where a woman can find herself out of a job if she has the “wrong” hairstyle. A woman might find herself passed on promotions or relegated to back office jobs if her hair doesn’t fit the expectations of the environment where she works. It is far beyond “looking pretty”, it can affect someone’s ability to pay rent\/mortgage\/ food. “Grey hair” in some environments can affect someone’s ability to get a promotion (due to looking old). So yes, I fully understand people’s concern on the subject.<\/p>\n

With that said, the response the woman got from Dear Coke Talk was privileged and annoying in ways I cannot even begin to elaborate. “Leave it to professionals, bitch” is only an option for those who have the disposable income to do so. Not everyone has the money to go to a stylist to maintain their hairstyle. I have been dying my hair since I am 14. I started with rainbow colors (firetruck red), moved to black, platinum blond, purple, back to black, etc. I am gifted with very strong and resilient hair so that gives me a lot of leeway for experimentation. However, I’ve seen people go almost bold from botched jobs. People with fine or weak hair might find themselves with less than flattering results if they attempt to color their hair with certain dyes, etc.<\/p>\n

Hair is a sensitive subject. I would encourage anyone to try coloring at home. I do it every couple of months. However, it might not be so simple for many.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
