{"id":5189,"date":"2010-07-08T14:13:00","date_gmt":"2010-07-08T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.transversalmedia.eu\/thingsiatethatilove-i-wrote-something-online\/"},"modified":"2010-07-08T14:13:00","modified_gmt":"2010-07-08T14:13:00","slug":"thingsiatethatilove-i-wrote-something-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theresearchpapers.org\/archive\/thingsiatethatilove-i-wrote-something-online\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='https:\/\/test.transversalmedia.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/tumblr_l58sob4drT1qz9bjro1.mp3'>tumblr_l58sob4drT1qz9bjro1<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thingsiatethatilove.tumblr.com\/post\/785312470\/i-wrote-something-online-about-the-unique\">thingsiatethatilove<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2259434\/\">wrote something online<\/a> about the unique pressures and responsibilities of writing online, and how sometimes women-focused blogs like Jezebel, Broadsheet, and XX \u2014 the lattermost of which published it \u2014 don\u2019t live up to them.\u00a0 As usual some people agreed with me and some people didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Because they were writing online the people who didn\u2019t agree with me mostly resorted to a. misstating my argument based on half-reading the piece while b. calling me names.\u00a0 This is nothing new; what <em>is<\/em> new is my conviction that most of the people who make a big point of identifying themselves first and foremost online as feminists \u2014 in their Twitter bios or the \u201cdescription\u201d lines of their blogs \u2014 are actually about as \u201cfeminist\u201d as Tucker Max.\u00a0 Also, that no one will ever let me forget that I worked at Gawker, no matter how many years pass, no matter how much other stuff I do and no matter how different that stuff is from what I did during 2006-7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t work at Gawker now; I don\u2019t work at Slate now.\u00a0 I don\u2019t work anywhere.\u00a0 The thing I read about myself during my bedtime narci-google yesterday that raised my hackles the most was being called \u201cSlate\u2019s Emily Gould.\u201d\u00a0 I got paid $400 to write the piece I describe above, and that was after wheedling.\u00a0\u00a0 For $400, I don\u2019t get to be \u201cSlate\u2019s Emily Gould.\u201d\u00a0 I am no one\u2019s Emily Gould but my own, and I have the scary letters from the IRS and the unopened bills for medical specialists to prove it.\u00a0 I had zero incentive to \u201cboost pageviews\u201d or \u201cuniques\u201d with that piece.\u00a0 I wrote it because I felt like someone had to.\u00a0\u00a0 This is maybe a bad or self-destructive impulse, but at this point it feels like even if I try,\u00a0 I can\u2019t get out of what I\u2019m into.<\/p>\n<p>Oh also, I wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/thefastertimes.com\/books\/2010\/07\/07\/writing-advice-from-emily-gould\/\">advice column about being a writer<\/a> at The Faster Times, for free.\u00a0 Please click on it so that next month when rent is due I can pay my landlady in attention.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Emily Gould responds to the cat fight accusations. Sadly, in the end, the criticism of her original Slate column is yet another attempt at getting more page views.
