They were having a conversation. \u201cExcuse me,\u201d I said, addressing the girl: \u201cI\u2019m sorry to interrupt, but is there anyway I can take your photo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you want my photo?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you look beautiful,\u201d I said. And she did. She was Sudanese. There is a very distinct beauty among people from the Sudan, and she was filled up with it. Suddenly the man cut in:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just telling her she was beautiful,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naively, I assumed I had just walked up on one stranger giving a compliment to another. I wanted to capture the moment. \u201cLet me take your photograph together,\u201d I said. The man seemed reluctant, he started smiling nervously and inching away. But the girl called him back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome take a picture with me,\u201d she said. Encouraged by her attention, he returned. She put her arm around him, and I took the photo.<\/p>\n<p>As I examined the photos on my camera, the man started whispering to the girl. She answered him in a loud voice: \u201cI told you! I\u2019m not that kind of girl.\u201d She seemed agitated now. Finally sensing that I had misread the situation, I stepped between them. The man began hurrying down the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>When the man left, the girl\u2019s demeanor changed completely. She seemed shaken. Her eyes were tearing up. \u201cHe just offered me five hundred dollars to go out with him,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then when I said \u2018no,\u2019 he offered me one thousand. Why does this always happen to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happens a lot?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the time,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m sorry I\u2019m getting emotional. I just can\u2019t go out of my house without this kind of thing happening. I have a son. I\u2019m a mother. I would never degrade myself like that. I just don\u2019t understand why this keeps happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you mind if I tell this story?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease,\u201d she said. \u201cTell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hope this man, and all men, realize the emotional damage they are inflicting on the women they try to buy.
