Oh, FUCK YOU, GEERT!
[Context: Today is the 65th birthday of the PvdA (Partij van de Arbeid – literally, Party of Labour). Job is Job Cohen, the party’s current leader.]
The tweet reads “Congratulations Job on the 65th birthday of the P(artyofthe)Arabians. You brought [the Netherlands] mass-immigration and imported many losers and criminals.”
This tweet illustrates perfectly well why, since yesterday, I am officially a member of D66. My partner is the campaign leader for Amsterdam New West (the biggest voter base in the Amsterdam area) and a party board member and, even though I was informally participating in Party activities, yesterday I caved and officially joined. I made the decision because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to participate in the Party’s congress next month, which I wanted to do.
Do I think D66 is the perfect, ultimate political force? Not by a long shot. Moreover, in today’s European politics, there is not such a thing as a flawless political platform. But after the disappointment I experienced with the Green Left, when Femke Halsema left politics, this is the only party where the democratic protection of the rights of minorities is still upheld and promoted. I do not agree with every stance in the platform, but again, unless I get involved as an official member (as opposed to just participating in debates as an outsider), there is no way I can try and influence those points.
For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone. Thank you. Follow me on Twitter for new post updates.
