Beck equates slavery with abortion

From the September 16 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks’ The Glenn Beck Program: “Yes, African Americans were people and unborn babies are people”. I cannot help but notice the use of past tense in the “African Americans were people”. Does this imply they no longer are?
