I get your point, but in the middle of winter, for example, it’s ridiculous for German supermarkets to stock blueberries flown in from South Africa. That’s privilege: believing that whatever you want should be available whenever you want it.

Sure. But I also have this counterpoint: why should we care?

And yes, I am being purposefully trite here, so it’s not that I do not share your point of view. It’s just that I am increasingly frustrated by these claims that “I should care about bigger issues”, like planetary well being, which of course I do… as you are well aware from reading my rants regularly. But I also have to genuinely ask: when is it OUR turn?

I see Argentinian/ South American food sold in my supermarket all the time. Peruvian mangoes in December! You know what my first thought is about those mangoes? I wanna buy them because I personally known Peruvian families earning a living out of selling mangoes grown in their farm. It’s a gut reaction. It’s not the right/proper reaction. And I have to wonder: how many do you think go through a similar thought process? There is only so much macro thinking we can do before we revert to emotional reaction.
