Anti Porn wars
I’ve been exchanging a few Twitters with Rachel Kaye from Footsteps in the Dark e-zine and we were briefly discussing the porn wars of the ‘80s. I mentioned Andrea Dworkin as a good starting point to try to understand what feminism at the time was standing for (i.e. staunch anti porn stances). She then asked if I had any specific recommendations and since this would be too long for a 140 characters Twitter post, I thought I could make a quick list of links here (which will double as a reference for me as well).
So, without further ado, a list of some Dworkin related material and her strong anti porn positions:
- Why Men Like Pornography & Prostitution So Much (mp3 file) Keynote Speech at International Trafficking Conference, 1989.
- Andrea Dworkin’s Attorney General’s Commission Testimony (mp3 file) on Pornography and Prostitution
- Prostitution and Male Supremacy speech (text) She delivered this speech at a symposium entitled “Prostitution: From Academia to Activism,” sponsored by the Michican Journal of Gender and Law at the University of Michigan Law School, October 31, 1992
- Pornography Happens to Women (text) Dworkin delivered this speech at a conference entitled “Speech, Equality and Harm: Feminist Legal Perspectives on Pornography and Hate Propaganda” at the University of Chicago Law School March 6, 1993.
- A woman writer and pornography (text) an Afterword to both the British and German editions of her book Pornography: Men Possessing Women.
- Intercourse on Google Books. One of her main books and a fundamental text to understand the so call “porn wars” of the 80’s.
For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone.
