Budgens chain in London pilot scheme offering shoppers ‘hope-branded’ wooden blocks for £1 to raise cash for Alzheimer’s Society.

Supermarket to sell blocks of ‘hope’ in charity promotion | Society | guardian.co.uk

There’s a photo of the wooden blocks at the link, which are described as roughly the size of a cereal box. Now, of course, I have to ask the obvious: how much does it cost to produce these cunningly named “Blocks of Hope” (made of polished wood and with the word engraved on the surface)? Because both in terms of labor and the loss of trees, I cannot imagine selling them for 1 British Pound.

In other news, I am drafting the business plan to start selling “Anti Bigotry Bricks”. Less glamorous and feel good but entirely more effective. Though I doubt I’d attract the crowd keen on these “Blocks of Hope”.

For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone.
