Indie writers and self publishing
Boing Boing has a mini round up of the self publishing phenomenon and indie writers. They mention Amanda Hocking, who is, apparently, the most successful of the lot. I am truly impressed by the figures mentioned. She sold 450,000 ebooks in January alone. Someone in the comments made a quick calculation (the median earning between her titles and the different price ranges) and they claim she made in the vicinity of 900k, again, just in January.
Sure, she is an outlier (not representative of indie writers as a whole), but I am seriously impressed nonetheless. I also wonder how this is going to affect not only fiction, but niche topics as a whole (political essays, technical books, etc.).
For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone. Thank you. Follow me on Twitter for new post updates.
