LLOYD TIME: EATING THE OTHER
Public session of reading group PLUG, which aims to raise awareness of media representations of racial stereotypes.
PLUG is an initiative of Bel Parnell-Berry & Egbert Martina
The main objective of this reading group session will be to instigate an aesthetic analysis of how and when racialised bodies become edible bodies.
How do characters perpetuated in the media embody an edible state? How far is it arguable that this ‘edible state’ of the Other fulfils the nourishment and consumption of an audience? From this session, the organisers hope that participants will appreciate a more critical observation of the media and also that PLUG can contribute in a meaningful manner.
For those in or around Amsterdam today, this is the last session of the season for the PLUG reading group. It’s open to the general public and everyone can join the conversation. There will be a presentation by Egbert Martina (one of the group founders, together with Bel Parnell-Berry) and a panel discussion (you can hear my usual rants with the added bonus of screeching tone inflexion).
For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone. Thank you. Follow me on Twitter for new post updates.
