paper-is-patient replied to your post: How Addiction Turned Me Into a High-Flying Hooker
Oh my gosh, I read that earlier and immediately cringed and thought about what you’d have to say about it.
I don’t have much to say except that shit like that offends me. I am followed and follow myself a number of activists in sex workers rights and I differ to what they have to say on the subject. But from a media analysis standpoint (which is, after all, what I do mostly on this Tumblr), it upsets me to no end because stuff like that piece only contributes to the dehumanization and stigmatization of sex workers.
Oh, look at the silly addict and her life choices! Look at the “Other” and her “not at all like ours” life.
I am going to be hyperbolic as hell here, but after all, it’s part of my personality: shit like this contributes to crimes committed against sex workers. Sure, not directly, not by actually instigating them, but by further portraying them as damaged, broken individuals. That piece could very well be posted at the Daily Mail (in style and sensational approach). And that’s when I get angry because media has a responsibility towards ethical standards. Particularly when said media built its popularity riding the feminist pony.
For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone. Thank you. Follow me on Twitter for new post updates.
