If I don’t like something (say, a musician or a writer, or a TV show), I need to clarify that “I don’t hate them” because we live in this culture where matters of personal taste are not just that, they are reason enough to preface said preferences by announcing “I HATE X”. Alternatively, hearing that someone “HATES X” is reason enough to hate them back.
