Did you guys see That One Movie about a man, a straight white guy, who fucks up everyone else’s lives and then he gets a chance at redemption? It turns out, that his redemption is more than enough change and healing for everyone he’s hurt!
I think it was nominated for something.
YES I SAW IT. It’s called “The Self Help”. And what made it so so attractive is that the narrative focused mostly on bootstrapping. At one point, the hero stood on top of a hill and he yelled “I BOOTSTRAPPED MY WAY OUT OF MY ABUSIVE PAST! I HAVE CONQUERED!!”. And he became an inspiration for all other folks who were enamored with the idea of “the cult of the individual”.
But there were no Black people in the movie. Only a couple of Asians that the hero made fun of because of their quirky names and a few Women of Color. The hero wanted them to cook his food like all the time. They once burned his steak and he got furious. But everyone in town totally didn’t care because he HAD BOOSTRAPPED HIS WAY OUT OF SIN! Just with the help of his bible and his mighty pen.
And then the movie ended and nobody was happy.
