This is interesting
Non Spanish speaking people on Twitter trying to explain to me what constitutes racism in South America based on what British media tells them regarding football players.
Because of course, the word “negro” is not racist at all in South America. And it is not casually used to “other” both Afro descendants and people with First Nations heritage. All my lived experience is nothing because some British tabloid is incensed due to a suspended football player from Uruguay who used derogatory words towards an opponent. The fact that Spanish speaking media in Uruguay is prominently featuring Afro-Uruguayan voices that vehemently support the suspension and are calling for a similar outcome in local football games will, of course, be ignored… because the person trying to convince me cannot read the language.
