A problem with the raise of extreme discourse

Show me an unreferenced quote from, say Glenn Beck, or something out of Ann Coulter or even Sarah Palin; then show me a headline from The Onion. Chances are I will not know which one is the satire and which one is the real deal. I think I am losing my ability to distinguish legitimate humor (even the kind that is not so good or well written) from supposedly serious statements.

I know the supposedly serious statements are terrifying (at least for me), but I am also worried about the unintended effect of this new kind of extremism. It is so pervasive that we either become immune to it or it starts to drip into other areas where even the most implausible ideas become worthy of consideration.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone. Thank you.  Follow me on Twitter for new post updates.
