And now we have a trope of quotes from “model minorities” in mass media. Those who say “I am also a minority, very disadvantaged, but I am not like them because I made the right choices”. And sure, that is true and we shouldn’t detract from that effort. However, media uses these instances to undermine solidarity and identification, as a tool to create divisions. It’s insidious and while I want every minority to succeed in whichever ways serves them, I also refuse the narrative that some of us are good while them, those “others” are bad by choice.
