It’s not a “widespread notion that immigrant = Muslim in Europe”, it’s a fear-mongering use of a stereotyped view of All Muslims as bad, problematic, backwards, violent if male and submissive if female, and fundamentally Others, even when they’re European, that is being overwhelmingly used and abused in mainstream discourse. Intersectionality means challenging this very idea instead of just going along with it to claim: hey, but we’re not all Muslims!

Yes. Indeed. But also, my point is not at odds with yours. My point is that this is an inherently racist trope obscured by the non use of the word Muslim. They WANT to say “Muslims are all this” but they won’t because they would then be exposed in their true racist colors. So, instead, they invent a new category. What happens as a result is that this new category erases everything that goes on in addition to the problems you mention (as in, the camps for migrants paid for by the EU in Africa, etc.). Instead, there is this non political identity that media loves to peddle which is “the immigrant”, which lacks nuance and represents nobody.

For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone.
