The day European tumblrs realised what kale is.

Underwhelmed faces all around.

Kale is col, right, Redlight? Not a fan.

Yes, kale is col en español, boerenkool in Dutch.

Incidentally, and not related to your question but it is a cool trick that has helped me navigate across my multi-cultural language issues, there is a Wikipedia trick to find out these things. You go to English wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org) and type “kale” in the search box. Then you look at the column on the left side of your screen and you will see a list of languages. If you click on one of them (say Nederlands), it will take you directly to the entry for that particular word in Dutch, so now you know it’s exact synonym. This works well with plants, spices, etc, when you are cooking a dish and you know an ingredient in a language other than the language of the place where you need to shop for the items. Also, it works not just with the English wiki, but with all other languages as well (meaning, you know the word “col” in Spanish, but you don’t know how it is called in English or Dutch, so you just do as described above, but on es.wikipedia.org).
