This is the very first photo ever uploaded to the internet, in 1992.

The four women in the photo, members of the pop band “Les Horribles Cernettes” were either employees of the CERN institute or related to employees. Back in 1992, the internet was purely used to post text and was used mostly by physicists (like those at CERN) and it was the husband of Michele de Gennaro, one of the women in the photo who took the picture and passed it along to a colleague to upload it in what would later on become the first graphic depiction on the WWW. A tidbit of amusing trivia: the band shares the same initials, LHC with the Large Hadron Collider, of Higgs boson fame.

More about the story behind these women here.

For the past decade and a half I have been making all my content available for free (and never behind a paywall) as an ongoing practice of ephemeral publishing. This site is no exception. If you wish to help offset my labor costs, you can donate on Paypal or you can subscribe to Patreon where I will not be putting my posts behind a lock but you'd be helping me continue making this work available for everyone.
